Biography

Lavinia Agache first came to notice at the 1980 European Junior Championships, placing third in all-around. In 1981 she won the International Japan Junior Invitational, and then competed in the World Championships, placing seventh in all-around. However, it was later discovered that Romanian authorities had lied about her age to allow her to compete there, listing her year of birth as 1966 when she was actually born in 1968. In 1982 she was third in the all-around World Cup and won a silver medal in floor exercises. Her best major meet was the 1983 Worlds, where she won silver in the team all-around, vault and uneven bars, bronze on the beam, and placed sixth all-around. Agache retired after a knee injury at the 1984 Universiade. She came out of retirement in 1991, competing in the first World Professional Championships, and then relocated to the United States, appearing in multiple shows. She later married Tom Carney and has worked as a gymnastics coach.
