There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. The gold medal on beam was shared by Romanians Simona Păuca and Ecaterina Szabo. This was one of three apparatus gold medals won by Szabo, who missed out only on the uneven bars. Americans went 3-4, with Kathy Johnson winning the bronze medal and individual all-around champion Mary Lou Retton placing fourth. This was the only apparatus on which Retton did not win a medal in Los Angeles.
