There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. After the team qualifying Ecaterina Szabo had a narrow lead over Americans Julianne McNamara and Mary Lou Retton. As Szabo prepared for her final routine, a power failure in Pauley Pavilion put the lights out and her routine was delayed for eight minutes. When power was restored, the scoreboard showed that McNamara had just been awarded a perfect 10 for her performance. This meant that Szabo had to score a 10 to defeat McNamara, which she did, as Retton won the bronze medal. This was one of three apparatus gold medals won by Szabo in Los Angeles, missing out only on the uneven bars.
