Nicolas Kanivé represented Luxembourg at the Olympics as a gymnast and a track & field athlete. He represented the club US Hollerich and later the Cercle Grand-Ducal d’Escrime et de Gymnastique Luxembourg. Kanivé competed at the 1907 World Championships, where he placed fourth with the team, as well as at the 1911 World Championships. He then placed joint fourth at the first national trials in January 1912. After the final trials in June, he was one of 16 gymnasts selected for the Olympics. Kanivé competed in gymnastics at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics where he finished in 20th place in the individual all-round event. He was part of Luxembourg’s team that finished in fourth place in the all-round event and in fifth place in the all-round free system event.
Kanivé was also selected to compete in the decathlon at the Stockholm Games but did not start the event. After World War I Kanivé competed in the long jump at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics, finishing in 29th and last place. Before World War I, he won a couple of track & field championships of Luxembourg, for instance in long jump and the overall championship standings, and had many podiums including 110 m hurdles, shot put discus and pole vault. In 1917 Kanivé married Anna Krier. He worked as a locksmith.
