Biography

Slovak gymnast František Bočko represented ASC Dukla in Praha during the 1950s and 1960s and competed internationally for Czechoslovakia. In 1964 Bočko had a strong domestic performance, which earned him a place on the Czechoslovak team for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as an alternate, although he did not travel to the Games. Two years later he just missed out on a medal at the World Championships in Dortmund when the team finished fourth overall.

Over the next two years Bočko had more success domestically, becoming the Czechoslovak champion in the rings and vault in both 1967 and 1968, in addition to finishing second in the all-round event each year too. This time he was selected to go to the Olympics, where he helped Czechoslovakia to fourth place in the team event at the Mexico City Games. His best individual performance came in the floor exercise, tying for 14th place with three other gymnasts.

Bočko retired shortly after the Mexico City Games, with him then performing as part of an acrobatic ice revue group for the next nine years. He later completed a sports coaching course at Comenius University in Bratislava. He taught several prominent Slovak gymnasts including Arnold Bugár and Samuel Piasecký. In 1992 Bočko returned to the Olympics, this time in the capacity of a judge for the vault and horizontal bar events at the Barcelona Games.
