The format was the same as in 1964, with the best six gymnasts in the individual all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. Five of the six finalists were Japanese, joined by Soviet Valery Karasyov, who would place fifth. Japan finished 1-4, with the medals swept, in order, by Sawao Kato, Akinori Nakayama, and Kato’s brother, Takeshi. Nakayama would again win the silver medal in 1972 at München, after winning gold at the 1970 World Championships.
Top six on floor exercise in team all-around advance to apparatus final. 50% of qualifying score added to optional exercise done in finals.
