The format was the same as in 1964, with the best six gymnasts in the individual all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. All six finalists were from Japan (4) and the Soviet Union (2), but both Soviets won medals, with Mikhail Voronin taking gold and Sergey Diomidov bronze. The silver went to Yukio Endo, the 1964 individual all-around gold medalist. Voronin won five apparatus medals in Mexico City, missing only on floor exercise, in which he placed fourth, also winning gold on the horizontal bar.
Top six on horse vault in team all-around advance to apparatus final. 50% of qualifying score added to optional exercise done in finals.
