Biography

Charles Simms competed for the Los Angeles Turners and Southern Cal. He won the 1952 NCAA horizontal bar title. Simms led the Turners to AAU team titles in 1954 and 1957-59, winning individual titles in all-around and vault in 1954, and on the horizontal bar in 1953. In addition to competing in the 1952 and 1956 Olympics, Simms was on the US team at the 1954 World Championships. Simms served in the US Navy prior to college, 1947-49. After graduating from Southern Cal, he taught journalism at Beverly Hills High School. He also judged local, college, AAU, and NCAA meets and did some work as an editor for Modern Gymnast magazine.
