Biography

Martin Kobau was an Austrian rower participating at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. He teamed up with Harald Hofmann, Gernot Faderbauer, and Christoph Schmölzer in the lightweight coxless fours and reached the B-final where the boat came last and placed 12th. Four years later at Sydney Kobau rowed with Helfried Jurtschitsch, Bernd Wakolbinger, and Luggi Sigl, finishing ninth.

Kobau won the silver medal in the lightweight double sculls at the 1993 European Championships. He then moved to the lightweight coxless fours and placed fifth at the 1999 Worlds. In 2001, he had his greatest moment winning the gold medal at the Worlds with Wakolbinger, Sigl and Sebastian Sageder.

In 2003, Kobau, along with his teammates Jurtschitsch and Norbert Lambing, tested positive for nandrolone in a doping test and were suspended for six months. The ban was confirmed although it was determined that all three had not acted with the aim of enhancing performance and furthermore found no negligence in their actions.
