Neil Campbell

Born in Buffalo, New York in 1930, Neil Campbell moved with his parents to St. Catharines, Ontario one year later. Growing up Campbell would ride in fishing boats that his father had rented, before joining Saint Catharines Rowing Club. Becoming a great oarsman, he represented the club from 1955 until 1968, competing in both the four and eight rowing teams. In 1964 he competed at his first Olympics, rowing in the coxless fours at the Tokyo Games, with Canada finishing fifth in the B Final to place 11th overall. Four years later Campbell rowed as part of the eight crew at the Mexico City Games, this time coming third in the B Final to finish ninth overall.

In 1967 Campbell became the head rowing coach at Ridley College in Ontario, staying in the role for the next two decades. Under his leadership the college’s eight crew won multiple titles, including 14 Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association championships, as well as seven titles at the Henley Royal Regatta in England. Campbell’s ties with England were strong, with him coaching the rowing team of the University of Cambridge ahead of the 1985 edition of the Boat Race against Oxford. One year earlier he also coached the Canadian eight team that won gold at the Los Angeles Olympics.

Campbell received multiple recognitions for his contributions to the sport over the years, including the Order of Canada in 1981. In 1987 he was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, and in 2019 he was also inducted into the Canadian Rowing Hall of Fame.
