Brian McMahon first represented Canada as a member of its national rowing team at the 1983 World Championships, where he placed eighth in the coxed eights events alongside Stephen Beatty, Dean Crawford, Grant Main, Kevin Neufeld, Jim Relle, Pat Turner, Tim Turner, and the non-Olympian Rob Gibson. With the loss of Beatty, Gibson, Relle, and Tim Turner, and the addition of Mark Evans, Mike Evans, Blair Horn, and Paul Steele, the crew was more successful at the 1984 Summer Olympics, where they captured the gold medal by finishing just over 0.4 seconds ahead of the Americans. He remained with the eights over the next three editions of the World Championships, finishing tenth, ninth, and fifth, and attempted to defend his nation’s crown at the 1988 Summer Olympics. The team, consisting of Main, McMahon, Neufeld, Steele, Andy Crosby, Jason Dorland, Jamie Schaffer, Don Telfer, and John Wallace, placed sixth and McMahon retired shortly after the Games.
