“Colonel” Rice was a member of the Toronto Argonaut Rowing Club when he was selected to represent Canada at the 1904 Summer Olympics. There, alongside Alan Bailey, Phil Boyd, Thomas Loudon, Donald MacKenzie, Pat Reiffenstein, George Strange, William Wadsworth, and Joe Wright, Sr., he lost to the Vesper Boat Club of the United States in the final of the coxed eights. As there were only two teams in the event, however, Canada earned a silver medal. Rice continued to row for the Argonauts after the Olympics and helped them capture the coxless fours and eights titles at the 1905 edition of Canada’s Henley Royal Regatta.
