Biography

German rower Stephan Volkert was a four-time Olympian from 1992-2004, winning two gold medals (1992-96) and a bronze (2000) with the quadruple sculls. In 2004, the crew finished fifth. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf in 1992, Germany’s highest sports award. At World Championships, Volkert won six gold medals, one silver, and one bronze.

Nationally, Volkert won 13 German titles in single, double, and quadruple sculls, and later became a rowing coach at his home club RTHC Bayer Leverkusen. By profession, he became an industrial mechanic and engineer.
