Biography

Along with Renzo Sambo and coxswain Bruno Cipolla, Primo Baran beat the Netherlands on the artificial lake of Xochimilco to win the gold in the coxed pairs. Rejected by the Army, after winning the European Championships the year before and concerned about his amateur status, he asked journalists not to write that the federation had given them a gold watch. At the Games he recovered from a catarrh problem which had bothered his breathing in his early career. Baran also won a World Championship bronze and 2 European Championship silvers, all in the coxed pairs. In honor of his sporting achievements, Baran was awarded a gold medal by the Italian Olympic Committee.
