Biography

Giancarlo Crosta was born and bred in Pianello del Lario. He worked in the nearby Ferriera Falck foundry and rowed for their Canottieri Falck team. They trained on Lake Como after shifts in the foundry. The coxless-four crew that won the 1960 Roma Olympics silver medal was made up of Crosta, Tullio Baraglia, another Pianella native Renato Bosatta and Giuseppe Galante. With the same crew, Crosta won the 1961 European Championships gold in Praha, beating the Soviet Union quartet by two seconds, with Germany in third place.

A monument on the lakeside at Pianello del Lario commemorates the Olympic achievements of Crosta and Bosatta, and another Pianella rower, Giglio Moralli. The monument was inaugurated in 2014 and was attended by the three men.
