Rower Werner Biel participated in the coxless fours with Hanns Peters, and the brothers Hans and Achim Krause-Wichmann at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, which was the highlight of his career. The boat won its heat in 6:40.8 minutes ahead of the favored Norway and Italy boats. They lost their semi-final and also closely lost the repêchage semi-final and thus missed the final.
