Rower Hanns Peters participated in the coxless four with Werner Biel, and brothers Hans and Achim Krause-Wichmann at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, which was the highlight of his career. The boat won its heat in 6:40.8 minutes ahead of the favored Norway and Italy boats. They lost their semi-final and also closely lost the repêchage semi-final and missed the final.
Peters was an export merchant, who in 1955 converted to the Catholic Church and in 1966 was appointed to the pastoral council of the German Catholic community in Paris. There he became one of the first people to be appointed after the formation of the Council of the Catholic Church. He was the parish priest at Stuttgart-Botnang (1970-72) and the Queen Mary of Peace in Kehl (1972-79). From 1982-2006 Peters was a parish councilor in St. Karl Borromäus, in Munich-Fürstenried, and from 1994 was chairman of parishioners. From 1994-2013 he was chairman of the Dean Council of München-Fürstenried, and in this capacity was a member of the Diocesan Council and the Catholics Council of the Munich region, of which Peters was deputy chairman from 2002-10.
