Dave Turner rowed the seven-oar for Cal/Berkeley at the 1948 Olympics. The Cal team that year had lost twice to Washington but turned the tables at the U.S. Final Trials. Turner graduated in 1949 and rowed in the Cal boat which gained more revenge by defeating the Huskies at the IRA Regatta, thereby revenging their 1948 defeat in that race. He later become a career officer and pilot in the U.S. Navy., retiring in 1969 as a Lieutenant Commander after stints in Korea and Vietnam. After leaving the military Turner joined the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) as a civilian hurricane pilot, and recorded the most flights of any pilot into the eye of hurricanes, retiring from that career in 1993.
