John Welchli graduated from Brown in 1950 and was a fine all-round athlete for the Providence school. He competed for all four years on the swim, crew, and track teams, and ran cross-country for two years. Welchli was rather small for a world-class rower, only 160 lbs. (73 kg.), and he won numerous national championships in lightweight boats. After college he spent two years in military service and then resumed rowing. Competing for the Detroit BC, he was partnered at the Olympics by the McKinlay twins, Art and John and Jim McIntosh. Welchli later competed in masters’ rowing events, including the Head of the Charles Regatta. His business career was as the vice-president and treasurer of Securities Counsel, Inc., in Jackson, Michigan.
