Robert Zagunis’s only international experience came at the 1976 Olympics, although he was a spare at the 1975 Pan American Games, and was the manager of the 1983 Pan Am Games team. Zagunis competed for the Vesper Boat Club, and attended Oregon State University, graduating in 1976.
Zagunis became a commercial banker, working with the Bank of California and then First Interstate Bank from 1977-94. In 1988 he obtained a degree from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware. He joined Jensen Investments in 1993, and later became the firm’s principal and managing director. Zagunis met his wife, Catherine Menges, who also competed at the 1976 Olympics, through rowing. Their daughter, Mariel Zagunis, competed at the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympics, but not as a rower, rather as a fencer.
