Pete Stange was born in Santa Monica, California and played water polo at El Segundo High School, graduating in 1948. Spargo worked summers as a Los Angeles county lifeguard, but was later recruited by LA city to work at the Willis Street station. He retired after many years as a lifeguard working at Station 8 in Will Rogers. Stange played collegiately at UCLA. He helped the US win a bronze medal in water polo at the 1951 Pan American Games.
