Luis “Chiquis” Grajeda was considered one of Mexico’s best athletes. He was a fine all-round sportsman during his time at University, where he studied law between 1957-62. In addition to playing for the UACH (Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua) basketball team, he played tennis and golf, and was also a fine runner and swimmer. Grajeda represented the Chihuahua State basketball team between 1957-68, and played his club basketball with Dorados Chihuahua, and was five times the League MVP and six times leading scorer. His greatest moment was in 1967 when Dorados beat Distrito 90-74 to become national champions.
Internationally, Grajeda represented Mexico at the 1963 World Championships where he scored 160 points at an average of 20.0 per game, including 26 against the USA in their opening match. At the Olympics the following year, he scored 94 points as Mexico finished 12th. Grajeda won a silver medal at the 1967 Pan-American Games, and on ‘home soil’ in the1968 Mexico Olympics, they finished fifth. Grajeda announced his retirement after the Mexico Games, and was later inaugurated into the Chihuahua Sports Hall of Fame.
