Tom Whitehurst sailed in the 470 Class at the 1976 Olympics alongside his brother, Robert Whitehurst. In 1975 they had won the Youth World title. Their Olympic boat was named “Captain Card.” Tom Whitehurst later owned Whitehurst Marine in Pensacola, Florida. He would also work as a professional sailing coach.
