Race walker Martin Toporek was Austrian 10 km track walk champion in 1979-80 and 20 km champion 1981-1987 and 1990-91. He participated in the 1980 Moskva (Moscow) and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics over 20 km and placed 21st and 29th, respectively. At the 1982 European Indoor Championships he won a bronze medal over 5 km.
In 1996, Toporek tested positive for the doping substances methyl ephedrine, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine and was banned for three months. His former wife Viera Toporek was also an internationally successful long-distance runner and race walker.
