Biography

Track and field athlete George Black “Buck” Hester was a freshman at the University of Michigan when he was selected to compete for Canada at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Hester specialised as a sprinter, running in both the 100 and 200 metres and reaching the semi-finals in the former. He was also part of the Canadian quartet that reach the semi-finals of the 4 × 100 metres relay. Four years later he returned to the Olympics for the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. He suffered some bad luck, however, just missing out on the semi-finals of the 100 metres and being disqualified in the 200 metres for a lane violation. He again ran in the 4 × 100 metres relay but the Canadian team were disqualified in the final when the baton was dropped on the final exchange.

In 1926 Hester won the Penn Relays 100 metres and finished second in the same event at the Canadian championships. The following year he defended his Penn Relays title and won the 100 metres at the Big Ten championships. He was inducted into the Michigan Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2009.

Personal Bests: 100 – 10.7 (1924); 200 – 21.8 (1924).
