Ragnar Stenberg

Finland’s Ragnar Stenberg was a champion track sprinter, national record holder, and member of several sports associations. In August 1907 Stenberg ran the 400 metres in 53 seconds, which was the first recorded Finnish record for the distance. At the 1907 Finnish athletics championships he won gold in the 400 metres and the 110 metres hurdles, and won gold in the latter at the 1909 edition of the tournament. Stenberg ran in both the 100 metres and the 200 metres at the 1908 London Olympics, but did not advance from the heats in either race. He was also scheduled to compete in the 400 metres, 800 metres, 110 metres hurdles, and the long jump at the London Games, but did not start in any of those events.

Following his career on the track Stenberg was the chair of the track and field arm of the Finnish Sports Association from 1914 to 1915, and again from 1919 to 1922. From 1921 to 1926 he was also a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations council. Stenberg graduated in dentistry in 1914 and worked in a practice in Helsinki.
