György Csányi started his sports career in 1936 when he was in high school. In June 1940 Csányi finished first in the 200 metres at the national student championship. From 1940 to 1956 he competed in the colors of UTE (the Budapesti Dózsa, the Újpesti Dózsa). He won the Hungarian championship four times in 100 metres (1941, 1945, 1948–49), three times in 200 meters (1941, 1945, 1949), four times in the 4 × 100 metres relay (1945, 1952–54), and once in the 4 × 200 metres relay (1946). In addition to running disciplines he was also the national champion once in the long jump (1956) and twice in the long jump team (1949, 1950).

From 1947 to 1957 Csányi appeared thirty-nine times in the Hungarian national team where he was the member of the 4 x 100 metres relay team. As a member of relay he finished first at the 1947 World College Championships in Paris followed by fourth at the 1948 London Olympics. They won gold at the 1949 World College Champions in Budapest, bronze at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, and gold at the 1954 European Championships in Bern.

After his retirement Csányi mainly dealt with youth education. In civilian life he worked as an accountant for the United Izzo, then the economic department of the police. In December 1978, while preparing for an old boys indoor football match, he fell in the dressing room and died. He was 56.
