A sprinter and high hurdler, Rogelio Onofre competed at the 1960, 1964, and 1968 Olympic Games. He started in athletics as a high jumper but later focused on the sprints. At the 1962 Asian Games Onofre won a bronze medal in the 100 metres and anchored the Filipino 4x100 relay team to a gold medal. He won another bronze in the 4x100 relay at the 1966 Asian Games. He held the Philippine 100 metre national record of 10.57 (10.3 hand) for 45 years, until 2007. He was inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
Onofre started out running barefoot in local barrio races but later earned a Fulbright Scholarship that allowed him to train in Colorado and Los Angeles in the United States. After his athletic career he stayed in the United States where he worked as a security officer with Securitas.
