Ethel Harrington had been runner-up at the 1931 AAU Meet in the 50 yard dash and was considered a favorite for the 1932 Olympic team, while representing the Illinois Women’s Athletic Club. But in the 1932 Olympic Trials, which doubled as the AAU Championships, in her heat, she pulled up and did not finish. However, she explained to the officials that she had misjudged the finish line, and they allowed her to continue for a spot on the Olympic Team, but she would not count for the AAU Meet. Harrington went on to win the Olympic Trials and competed in Los Angeles in the 100 metres, but did not make the final there. In 1932 she ran on a 4x110 yard relay team that broke the world record.
Personal Best: 100 – 12.3 (1932).
