With Andy Stanfield and Thane Baker taking the first two places, Jim Gathers completed the medal sweep for the U.S. in the 1952 200 m by finishing third. Gathers, of the U.S. Air Force and formerly Tillotson College, officially placed equal third in the 100 m at the 1952 Final Trials, but the selectors preferred Dean Smith as their Olympic choice and Gathers ran only the 200 m in Helsinki.
Personal Best: 200 – 20.8 (1952).
