James McEachern was born on Prince Edward Island in Canada, but his family came to the United States in 1897 and he became a US citizen in 1906. McEachern never won an AAU title, but between 1915 and 1929 finished on the podium nine times in the hammer throw and weight throw. He competed for San Francisco’s Olympic Club and the Caledonian Club. McEachern joined the San Francisco police force in 1908 and that was his lifelong career. He often spent his lunch hours at Richmond Station throwing weights.
