Biography

A talented junior skater (Junior World Champion in 1997), Won Hye-Gyeong joined the very junior team of South Korea at the 1994 Olympics. Apart from capturing a gold medal in the relay, she performed admirably individually, falling just short of a medal in the 500 m. The South Koreans, and Won, defended their relay title successfully in 1998, when Won also managed to win an individual bronze in the 1,000 m. Won claimed four World Championships as well, winning three consecutive team titles (1995-97) and the 3,000 m at the 1996 Worlds in The Hague. She placed second in the overall standings that year, while placing third in 1997. Additionally, she won 10 more medals in World Championship distances.
