According to his own statements, Acklin only trained once a week, despite the importance of the start for the bobsleigh competition. This approach was highly successful, however, as together with pilot Gustav Weder, he became was first bobsledder to retain the Olympic two-man title. They never won a world title in the event, although tey placed second in 1989 and 1993. In the latter year, Acklin also was part of the crew that won the four-man world title.
