In addition to participating in alpine skiing, Herberts Bērtulsons worked as an employee of the political administration of the Latvian police. Bērtulsons competed in the combined event at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics where he completed the downhill element but did not finish in the slalom. Following the occupation of Latvia in 1940 he was arrested and deported to a Soviet prison camp. He spent the next two years in the camp before the NKVD sentenced him to death by firing squad in February 1942.
