Ice hockey forward Dieter “Didi” Hegen played in five consecutive Winter Olympics from 1984-98 and became one of the most successful, and best-known hockey professionals in Germany. He represented West Germany from 1984-88 and re-unified Germany from 1992-98. Hegen also participated in 12 World Championships. Internationally, he won 290 caps and scored 111 goals. In 2010 he was inducted in the International Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Domestically, Hegen played with ESV Kaufbeuren (his home club) from 1979-86, then Kölner Haie (1986-89), Düsseldorfer EG (1989-92), EC Hedos München (1992-94), Düsseldorfer EG, again (1994-98), Starbulls Rosenheim (1998-2000), and finally a return to ESV Kaufbeuren (2000-02). He won seven German national titles, with Köln (1987-88), Düsseldorf (1990-92, 1996), and München (1994). Hegen was top-scorer in the German Bundesliga in 1981, 1989 and 1992. After his active career he started coaching lower league clubs.
