Ray Fee, of San Franciscos Olympic Club, was probably a great poker player – he won his bronze medal on a bluff. In the 1924 Olympics he was beaten soundly in the semifinals by Jim MacKenzie of Great Britain, and in the process, so severely injured his arm that he couldn’t possibly box in the bout for third place. But he knew his opponent, Rinaldo Castellenghi of Italy was also injured, so Fee dressed for the fight, entered the ring and tried to look as fit as possible. Castellenghi looked at him, fell for the bluff and withdrew – giving Fee his bronze medal.
