Jim Johannson played college hockey at the University of Wisconsin, helping them win an NCAA Championship in his freshman year of 1982-83. Johannson was selected by the Hartford Whalers in the seventh round of the 1982 NHL entry draft, but never played a minute in the NHL. After college graduation he played in Europe with Landsberg EV, before joining the US National Team for the 1987-88 Winter Olympic season. Johannson spent his entire professional career after the 1988 Olympics in the International Hockey League, playing with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, Indianapolis Ice, and the Milwaukee Admirals. He later became a coach, coaching and serving as general manager of the Twin City Vulcans in the US Hockey League in the late 1990s, before moving on to become an executive with USA Hockey in 2000. In 2017-18 he had the high-profile role of being chosen to select and compile a USA hockey team for PyeongChang, after NHL players were declared ineligible to compete at the Winter Olympics.
