Biography

Between 1961 and 1982 Mexican tennis player Joaquín Loyo Mayo won 21 career singles titles. Mayo achieved a career-best singles ranking of #99 in the world in April 1976 and a doubles ranking of #91 in the world in March 1976. In 1967 he and compatriot Marcelo Lara won silver in the doubles at the Pan American Games. The following year Mayo competed in several singles and doubles events at the Mexico City Olympics where tennis was played as a demonstration sport. In one of the exhibition doubles matches he and Pierre Darmon finished second after losing to Rafael Osuna and Vicente Zarazúa in the final. Mayo had his best performance at a Grand Slam in 1971 when he reached the fourth round of the singles at Wimbledon.
