The two best known players in this event were Mexican Rafael Osuna and Italy’s Nicola Pietrangeli. Osuna ended up meeting West German Ingo Buding in the final, defeating him in three sets in a best-of-three final. Osuna had won the 1963 US Championship but was better known as a doubles player. Buding had won the 1958-59 French Boys’ titles, but never won a major title at the senior level.
