Biography

Andrzej Karcz was a Polish track and field athlete who specialised as a sprinter. From 1956 to 1962 Karcz competed at a dozen international meets for the Polish team but did not have any individual victories. He was the “nearly” man at the national championships, winning three silvers and three bronze medals, with his best individual performance coming in the 200 metres in 1960 when he finished second. He was named as an alternate for the 4 × 100 metres relay at the 1960 Roma Olympics but the Polish team were disqualified in their heat, with Karcz therefore not having a chance to run. After his athletics career he graduated from the medical academy of Warszawa, working as a specialist surgeon for the rest of his life.
