Biography

Professional tennis player Barbara Schett was a mainstay on the Austrian Fed Cup team, playing in 48 matches between 1993 and 2004, winning 30 of them. Schett was a good all-round player who achieved a career-best singles ranking of #7 in the world in September 1999 and a doubles ranking of #8 in the world in January 2001. She had her first WTA Tour victories at the 1996 Palermo International in Italy, winning both the singles and doubles titles, partnering Janette Husárová in the latter. Schett won a further two singles titles and nine doubles titles during her career.

In 2001 Schett and Australian tennis player Joshua Eagle finished as runners-up in the mixed doubles at the Australian Open. Schett and Eagle got married in 2007, with the couple living in Sunshine Beach, Queensland. As a singles player she reached the quarter-finals at the US Open in 1999 but lost to Venus Williams in straight sets. In doubles Schett reached the quarter-finals of the French Open on four occasions (1998, 2000, 2001, 2003), and the semi-finals at the US Open (1999, 2004) and the Australian Open (2000).

Schett represented Austria at the 2000 Sydney Olympics where she reached the singles quarter-finals before losing to the eventual silver medallist Yelena Dementyeva. She also partnered Patricia Wartusch in the doubles, but lost to Volha Barabanshchykava and Natasha Zverava in the first round. Schett retired from the sport in 2005 and went on to work for Eurosport as a presenter.
