Biography

Born in Costa Rica to Spanish parents, Juan Antonio Marín began his tennis career representing Spain before competing for Costa Rica from 1998 onwards. Marín achieved a career-best singles ranking of #55 in the world in October 1999 and a doubles ranking of #188 in the world in February 2007. He made it to the singles final of an ATP event on two occasions, both at the Swedish Open, losing to Magnus Norman in 1997, before winning his only title two years later with victory against Andreas Vinciguerra.

Marín reached the first round at Grand Slams on 17 occasions between 1997 and 2006, but never won a match in the main draw. In 2000 he played in the singles at the Sydney Olympics, losing to the eventual gold medallist Yevgeny Kafelnikov in straight sets.
