Joe Sawyer attended Denver East High School in Colorado, where he was team captain in football and swimming, and was All-City as a football linebacker, basketball guard, and freestyle swimmer. Sawyer then went to the University of Colorado where he played linebacker from 1984-86, and earned a degree in kinesiology. In 1991 he was runner-up at the US Push Championships, and he placed fourth as a driver at the 1992 US Olympic Trials, but made the team as a pusher.
