In 1984, Sperr had a severe bobsleigh accident at Cervinia, falling into a coma for 17 days. Doctors gave him only a 50:50 chance of survival. However, he went on to win two four-man national titles, in 1987 and 1988. Sperr later became a graduated sports teacher.
