Sailing at the 1964 Summer Olympics

There were five yachting events in 1964, and the program was exactly the same as in 1960, the first time this had occurred at consecutive Olympics, although the 1968 yachting program would also be the same. The events were held in Sagami Bay, or Sagami-wan, a bay on the coast of Enoshima, an island just off the Japanese shore from Tokyo. The original plan for 1964 sailing was to have it take place in Yokohoma, as was to occur for the 1940 Olympics, but this plan was changed.

The scoring system was the same as in 1948-60, although it would be changed after 1964. Points were awarded in each race based on placement in the race and the number of boats racing. The worst of a boat’s seven scores were eliminated, thus using the best six of seven scores for the final total.

Only eight nations won yachting medals in 1964, led by the United States with five, although it did not win a gold medal, as five different nations won the five events. Denmark, Germany, and Sweden also won two medals.
