There were again four events, singles and doubles for men and women. The format was slightly different. Once again a series of round-robin pools qualified players and teams for a single-elimination tournament – of 16 players in singles, and eight teams in doubles. In 1988, the singles events had eight pools of eight players each, and the doubles events had four pools of eight teams, with the top two finishers in each pool advancing to the single-elimination tournament. But in 1992 the format was changed in singles to 16 pools of four players each, and in doubles to eight pools of four teams each, with only the winner of the pools advancing to single-elimination. All pool matches were best of three games, while the elimination matches were best of five games, all played to 21.
