The format was changed slightly from 1936, with the addition of a downhill and a slalom event for men and women. Combined competitions were held again, as in 1936. The downhill events were held at the Corviglia-Piz Nair ski area above St. Moritz. The slalom events were held at Suvretta, above and to the west of St. Moritz. Because of World War II these were the first full international championships since the 1939 World Championships. The combined events consisted of a special slalom competition that followed the open downhill, which was used for the combined event as well. The combined would be discontinued at the Winter Olympics after 1948, although it would continue to be contested at the World Championships, and it would return to the Olympics in 1988.
