For the first time since 1952, the Olympic Alpine program was changed, this time by the addition of two events for both men and women – the Super G, or Super Giant Slalom, and the Alpine combined. The combined was a combination of downhill and slalom, and had been on the Olympic program in 1936 and 1948. The combined was contested on the World Cup circuit since 1975, and the Super G had been a World Cup event since 1983. All the Alpine events were raced at the Nakiska Ski Resort, on Mount Allan, 83 km. west of Calgary. In addition to the regular program, two events for disabled skiers were held as an exhibition.
