The 2002 format was unchanged for the 2006 Games. Both men and women had ten team tournaments with a round-robin first stage. The top four teams qualified for the semi-finals with teams that had an equal number of wins facing a play –off or series of play-offs if qualification for the semis was at stake.
The New Zealand men’s team qualified for Turin, thus becoming the first Southern hemisphere team to compete.
