The Olympic boxing tournament was held in the Vélodrome d’Hiver in Paris. Matches at Paris were contested over three rounds, the first two lasting three minutes each and the last round of four minutes. Two judges and a referee judged each match. The judging was more multi-national than in previous Games with judges from Europe, North America and South Africa officiating. The number of competitors showed an increase with 181 taking part, over 50% more than in Antwerp. The competition ran between July 15th and 20th, two sessions being held every day except finals day. A total of 19,000 spectators were present over the course of the competition.
The tournament itself will go down as one of the most contentious in Olympic history, protests, withdrawals, demonstrations and near-riots occurred, usually directed at the standard of the officiating.
